March 2014 report

During March our team continued  the work on the project islets, as well as the preparation of the shrub planting action. Special water boxes have been purchased from the Netherlands to cover the plantings irrigation needs and are expected to be placed on the islets within the first days of April, when weather permits the approach to the islets.

The environmental education experts of NCC and HOS, in collaboration with the Korthi Environmental Education Center, organized a seminar for local schools teachers and concerned citizens (March 29th), presenting the project environmental education material. It was followed by a presentation and implementation of the education material to students of two primary schools of the island (March 31st).

HOS selected a field researcher to carry out the monitoring field work needed during the breeding season and so far, field monitoring for Bonelli’s Eagle has been completed.

A working meeting was held on March 14th between HOS and the Municipality of Andros at LIFE office in Korthi, to discuss the activity schedule of the Local Conservation Group.

An public awareness event to welcome spring and the migrating birds, addressed mainly to school children, was organized on March 30th in Andros town (Chora).

Regular patrolling and surveillance takes place according to the plan all over the project area (land and sea), including monitoring of the cultivated project fields.
